Arthritis in your hip joints can cause inflammation and pain that makes it difficult to walk. A hip joint steroid injection can help relieve this pain and get you back to the activities you love.
Hip joint injections combine powerful, anti-inflammatory steroids with pain-relieving anesthetics. The injection can provide months of pain relief and be repeated if the pain returns. Injecting the hip joint can also help your physician determine if the pain is originating in your hip or your spine, depending on your level of relief from the hip injection.
At The Spine Care Center, our pain management experts treat all types of pain, including hip pain. We perform thousands of steroid injections each year to safely relieve pain and help our patients avoid surgery.
If you are receiving sedation for your hip joint steroid injection, you may need to avoid food and water for several hours before your procedure. You will also need a friend or family member to drive you home.
Your doctor will provide you with any preparation instructions, including any medicines you should avoid taking before your injection. Always tell your doctor about any medicines, herbs, or supplements you are taking. If you have any questions or concerns about your procedure, you should always ask your doctor.
We perform hip joint steroid injections in our comfortable procedure suite located inside of our office in Manassas. Because our pain medicine doctors are also board-certified in anesthesiology, they can provide sedatives to help you feel more relaxed during your injection.
Once you are sedated, your doctor will apply a local anesthetic to your hip. They will also clean your hip and inject a special contrast dye that shows up on our live X-rays. Your doctor will use live X-ray guidance to carefully place the needle into your hip joint at the exact spot suspected of causing your pain. This precise needle placement entails a higher chance of a successful injection.
After the needle is in place, your doctor will slowly inject the medicine. They will then remove the needle and put a bandage on the injection site. The entire appointment takes about 45 to 60 minutes.
After your procedure, you will need to stay in our office for about half an hour while the sedation wears off. You will be closely monitored by our clinical staff as you recover. Your designated driver can then take you home.
You should begin to feel the effects of the injection within a few days. You may have a bruise at the injection site, and you can use an ice pack for 20 minutes every hour if it is causing you discomfort.
The next day, you can return to your normal activities. In rare cases, you may have side effects from the steroid like a flushed face or trouble sleeping. If you are concerned about side effects, please talk to your physician during your consultation.
